How To Make BBQ Chicken Skewers
A thick, smoky and perfectly sticky barbecue sauce can transform your grilled meat into something special when given the right flavors!
- Simply thread the chicken in some skewers alternately with some vegetables. I used bell peppers and onion.
- Place them on the grill to cook turning them occasionally to get that nice char on all sides. Let cook for about 10-15 minutes.
- For the sauce, mix chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, honey and regular old barbecue sauce until combined.
- When the chicken skewers are almost cooked through, brush them with plenty of Honey Chipotle Barbecue sauce and they are done.
- Pair them with some bread, corn or tortillas and you are set.
Can you use chicken thighs for skewers?
I prefer to use chicken breast for this recipe, but you can absolutely use thighs if you prefer. If you do use thighs, be sure to trim the fat off of them and be aware that you will have to cook them for a few minutes longer.
How do you cut chicken for skewers?
You don’t want to cut the chicken too small so that if falls off of the skewer or too big so that it takes longer to cook and is trickier to eat. I like to cut the breast into cubes that are about 1 inch.
Can you make them ahead of time?
These BBQ chicken skewers are best served as soon as they are cooked, but if you want to get ahead of things you totally can! You can thread the skewers up to a day ahead of time and keep them covered in the fridge. You can also make the honey chipotle chicken glaze ahead of time and keep it covered in the fridge.
Recipe Notes and Tips
- You can use metal or wooden skewers. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for about an hour before grilling to keep them from burning in the grill.
- Be sure to cook the chicken all the way through. The outside should be slightly charred and have a uniformed white color inside. If you have an instant read thermometer they should register at 165F.
- Use your favorite BBQ sauce for this recipe.
Make sure you have enough for everyone because once they try it, they won’t want to stop eating them and will be coming back for more, and more, and more. The depth of flavors in these Grilled Honey Chipotle Barbecue Chicken Skewers is out of this world.
Bring out some beers and enjoy!
