How to cut an avocado – step by step
1. Hold the avocado gently in one hand. With a large knife in the other hand, cut the avocado lengthwise around the seed.
2. Give the two halves a little twist and open them to expose the pit.
3. Carefully and gently, tap the pit with the knife. Give it enough force so that the knife-edge slightly wedges into the pit. Twist the pit out. Pinch the pit off from the top edge of the knife and discard.
Note: If you are concerned about using the knife to remove the pit of the avocado, you can also scoop it out using a spoon.
4. At this point, you can peel the avocados in different ways. You can simply peel off the skin leaving both halves whole or scoop it out with a spoon. You can also slice or cube the avocado by running the knife through the avocado in a cross pattern being very careful not to cut through the peel. Then, use a spoon to scoop out the avocado pieces and transfer into a bowl.
Enjoy avocados as part of a healthy lifestyle
Avocados are a nutritionally dense food, they contain close to 20 vitamins and minerals. They are a rich source of healthy omega-3 fatty acids and they have a good amount of fiber to aid digestion. You can read more about the health benefits of this fruit here.
Can you eat avocado everyday?
Most guidelines state that 1/2 an avocado a day is a good amount to eat. You can’t ‘overdose’ on avocado, but they are high in calories at around 200-300 for each one.
How do you know when an avocado is ripe?
If an avocado isn’t ripe, the skin will be very hard to remove and it will be hard to eat. Before you cut into the avocado, gently squeeze it in the palm of your hand. It should give slightly, but no so much that it feels mushy. If it’s very soft it is past its best.
How to ripen an avocado quickly
You can speed up the ripening process slightly by placing the avocados in a brown bag with an apple or banana.
Are unripe avocados safe to eat?
Yes. If you don’t have time to let the avocado ripen, it will be safe to eat, but the texture won’t be as creamy and it will have a more mild flavor. If you are desperate to make that batch of guacamole, you can soften it in the microwave for 30 seconds. But if you can, wait a couple of days.
And there you go, now you know how to cut and avocado! Isn’t that easy? Now you can go ahead and make all the delicious guacamole and avocado on toast, your sweet little heart desires.
