Ingredients
- Brownie Cake Mix: Use your favorite brand. A pre-made mix is so convenient as you don’t have to buy or measure out separate ingredients like all-purpose flour and cocoa powder.
- Large Egg: Used to bind the ingredients together.
- Milk: You just need a few tablespoons of milk, for a creamier and richer brownie you can use half and half or cream.
- Vegetable oil: This helps to keep the brownies nice and moist.
- Dulce de Leche: This caramel-like sauce takes these brownies to another level. Dollop it on top of the brownies before baking and then finish with an extra drizzle!
How to Make Dulce de Leche Brownies
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Using baking spray, grease a 9 x 9-inch baking pan, or line with parchment paper.
- In a mixing bowl whisk together brownie mix, egg, milk, and oil. Stir well until blended.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
- Spoon the dulce de leche over the top of the brownie batter and run a table knife or a toothpick through the mixture to slightly incorporate and swirl the dulce the leche with the brownie batter.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted 2 inches from the edge of the pan comes out clean.
- Let brownies cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool to room temperature.
- Cut into squares. Drizzle with additional dulce de leche if desired and serve.
Frequently Asked Questions
Dulce de leche, a caramel-like sweet sauce that’s made with sweetened condensed milk so that it’s nice and creamy. It’s one of my favorite dessert toppings!
I prefer the ease and convenience of using canned dulce de leche, but you can make your own on the stovetop in a saucepan or in the oven using a can of sweetened condensed milk. Find the two methods here. It takes a bit of time, but it’s pretty easy.
These dulce de leche brownies are best enjoyed within a couple of days so that they are nice and moist. Let them cool to room temperature before cutting them so that they keep their shape.
These chocolate brownies are best stored at room temperature as they can start to dry out in the fridge. Keep them in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
You can also freeze the brownies once they are fully cooled. Wrap them securely in plastic wrap and aluminum foil and place them in an airtight container or freezer bag. They will keep well for up to 3 months and can be thawed at room temperature to enjoy.
Recipe Notes and Tips
- Use oil or cooking spray rather than butter to grease your pan, as butter can burn and cause the brownies to stick.
- These dulce de leche brownies are made in a 9-inch square baking pan. You can use an 8-inch square pan, the brownies will be thicker and may take a few extra minutes to cook through.
- Fully preheat your oven before baking the brownies so that they cook through evenly.
- If you have a favorite from-scratch brownie recipe, you can use that instead of the pre-made mix.
- Let the brownies cool a little in the pan before removing and placing them on a wire cooling rack. A wire rack will allow the air to circulate to cool the brownies so they don’t get soggy.
- It’s easier to mix together the ingredients by hand, but you can use an electric mixer if it’s easier.
- Try sprinkling a little flakey sea salt on the baked brownies for an extra burst of flavor!
