There’s something about a fresh, vibrant salsa like this that just hits every time. It’s light but satisfying, simple but full of flavor, and comes together in minutes without feeling like a “quick fix” recipe.
This shrimp avocado salsa is one of those dishes that lives somewhere in between a salad and a salsa. It’s bright, a little zesty, and packed with texture—tender shrimp, creamy avocado, juicy tomatoes, and just the right amount of heat.
If you love fresh, scoopable dishes like Pico de Gallo or something a little more filling like my Shrimp Avocado Mango Salad, this is one you’ll want to keep on repeat.
It’s the kind of recipe you can pull together for a casual lunch, serve as a quick appetizer, or bring out when you want something that feels fresh without overthinking it.

What Makes This Shrimp Avocado Salsa Work
This recipe is all about balance.
You get:
- Creaminess from the avocado
- Freshness from the tomatoes, cilantro, and lime
- Texture from perfectly cooked shrimp
- A little heat from jalapeño and red pepper flakes
Everything is chopped, tossed, and brought together with a simple lime dressing that ties it all in without overpowering the ingredients.
It’s simple, but it doesn’t feel basic.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Start by cooking the shrimp. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, then season the shrimp with paprika and a pinch of salt. Cook for just 2 to 3 minutes per side, until they turn pink and opaque. Be careful here—overcooked shrimp can get rubbery fast. Once done, remove from heat and let them cool.
If you’ve made dishes like my Camarones Guisados, you already know how quickly shrimp cooks—same idea here, just much simpler.
While the shrimp cools, prep the rest of your ingredients. Dice the tomatoes, avocado, red onion, and jalapeño. Chop the cilantro and set everything aside.
Once the shrimp has cooled, you can leave them whole or chop them into bite-sized pieces, depending on the texture you prefer.
Add everything to a large bowl, then pour in the fresh lime juice and season with red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper.
Gently toss everything together until combined. The key here is to mix just enough to bring it together without breaking down the avocado—you want those chunks to stay intact.

Serving Suggestions
This is one of those recipes that can go in a few different directions depending on your mood.
You can serve it simply with tortilla chips as a fresh appetizer, or build it into something more filling.
Try it:
- Spooned over tacos or tucked into warm tortillas
- As a topping for grilled chicken or fish
- Served alongside How to Make Perfect Tostones (Fried Green Plantains) for that crispy + fresh combo
- As part of a casual spread with dips like The Best Guacamole or a creamy option like Creamy Avocado Cilantro Dressing
If you’re building out a full table, this fits right in with bold, flavorful dishes while still bringing that fresh contrast.

Storage Tips
This salsa is best enjoyed the same day, when everything is fresh and the avocado is at its peak.
If you do have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Just keep in mind that the avocado will soften over time and the texture will change slightly.
For best results, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface before sealing to help minimize browning.

Recipe Tips
- Prep everything ahead of time except the avocado. Cut it right before serving to keep it fresh.
- If you’re short on time, you can use pre-cooked shrimp—just skip the cooking step and go straight to assembling.
- Chop the onion and jalapeño finely so they blend well into the salsa instead of overpowering it.
- Mix gently. Overmixing will turn this into more of a mash than a salsa.
- Adjust the heat to your taste by adding more or less jalapeño or red pepper flakes.
