    How to Make Taco Seasoning

Spices for taco seasoning measured out on a plate.

Perfectly balanced taco seasoning, made with chili powder, paprika, oregano, cumin, garlic powder and brown sugar. The best seasoning for tacos, fajitas, beef, chicken and more!

The first time I tried taco seasoning was one my husband brought home from a popular restaurant in Miami. Their seasoning was so good that they bottled it and sold it to their customers.

It was a pretty good one I must confess. The mixture of spices they use gave the meats I cooked with it a spicy but also slightly sweet taste that was well balanced and absolutely delicious.

The thing is that after moving back to the North East, I could no longer get this fabulous seasoning. So, I decided to give it a try and make my own homemade taco seasoning and see how I faired out.

    How to Make Taco Seasoning

Making this taco seasoning recipe is fairly simple. I combined chili powder, cumin, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, oregano, black ground pepper and a bit of dark brown sugar. The trick is to have the right balance of spices for optimal flavor.

    What You Will Need

    • Chili powder
    • Cumin
    • Garlic powder
    • Onion powder
    • Paprika
    • Oregano
    • Salt
    • Black ground pepper
    • Brown sugar

Add all ingredients to a bowl and whisk until well combined. Reserve in an air-tight sealed container like a mason jar and store in your pantry.

    How to Use taco Seasoning

You can use taco seasoning to season meat (beef, chicken, turkey) and/or beans to make tacos, burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, etc. While I tend to season the chicken before I start cooking it, with ground beef you want to brown the meat first and then add your reasonings to ensure the flavors distribute appropriately.

Two tablespoons of this seasoning are equivalent to one store-bought taco seasoning packet, which is enough to season one pound of meat.

    Make It Your Own

I usually make small batches to keep at home but you can easily double or triple the measurements to make more.

This recipe is more on the milder side. If you’d like to kick the spice level up a bit, you can add more chili powder or some red pepper flakes. But I suggest you do a taste test first before you go adding too much heat.
