Easy Dominican Style Flatbread Chimi Pizza ~ Inspired by the popular Dominican burger, Chimi, traditionally served by street vendors in the Dominican Republic, this pizza is made with flatbread, sausage, cabbage, onions, tomatoes and a mayo-ketchup sauce.
It is no secret that I love to eat. I have actually mentioned before that I started this blog mostly because I really love food. Not cooking so much. But, eating. That is my real passion. I don’t keep that a secret because it is just reality and everyone who knows me, knows that I am a real foodie.
I have another confession to make, though. I really, really, really love street food. Please don’t judge me. From tacos to churros and even hotdogs, I love it all. However, Dominican street food holds a unique and special place in my heart. Not only because I used to eat it all the time growing up back in the Dominican Republic, but because it is truly the most delicious of all. I’m talking fried meats, empanadas, yaniqueques, yaroas, quipes, Yuca stuffed rolls and the most famous of all: El Chimi.
Chimi is a Dominican style burger made and sold traditionally by street vendors in the Dominican Republic. It is typically made with seasoned beef, cabbage, tomatoes, onions and a delicious sauce mixture of mayonnaise and ketchup, which we call mayo-ketchup, all beautifully placed on a pan de agua. Pan de agua, which literally translates to water bread, is a bread that is similar to the French or Italian breads, where the ingredients are the same but the baking process is different.
Now that I’ve moved to South Florida, I’ve found myself really craving traditional Dominican street food. However, it is not as easy to find here as it was back in New York. The good thing is that this has given me the inspiration to recreate my favorite Dominican street foods in a simpler, healthier way, such as this Easy Dominican Style Flatbread Chimi Pizza.
To make it interesting, I decided to make a pizza inspired by the Dominican burger and used Flatout flatbread instead of regular pizza dough as a healthier option. I love Flatout because it is a blank canvas; it’s a perfect partner to help people of all ages make healthier choices. With Flatout less is more…less calories, carbs, time with more flavor and options! So, I don’t feel so bad when making my favorite street food at home. Flatout can be found at most grocery stores.
