Healthy Mamey Smoothie ~ An easy tropical fruit smoothie with all the flavors of the traditional Mamey (Zapote) smoothie made healthier.
Mamey or Zapote as it is called in the Dominican Republic is a delicious tropical fruit with a sweet earthy flavor that is difficult to describe. Growing up, I remember having quite a lot of it, specially the Zapote milkshake my grandmother always made for merienda because it was my mother’s favorite. It quickly became one of my favorites as well.
The traditional mamey (zapote) milkshake as I learned to make it from my grandmother is not as healthy as I would like now that I am trying to make better eating decisions and implementing a healthier lifestyle for the new year. I’m trying to incorporate more plant-based products into my diet but, I really missed having this fruit’s milkshake. Now that I live in Florida, I see it all the time at the grocery stores, which makes me a bit melancholic.
So, I took it upon myself to create a healthier version of the original recipe that I could have any time without feeling guilty.
I bought a couple of the mamey fruit during my latest trip to the store and while shopping at Walmart, I picked up a half-gallon Silk Vanilla Flavor Soy milk to use as a substitute for regular milk. You can swap Silk for milk cup for cup in almost any dish, from creamy soups to tempting desserts. You’ll love the taste, and probably won’t miss the lactose and cholesterol of dairy milk one little bit.
While at the store, I also picked up some Silk almond creamer to have with my morning coffee because I just can’t live without my coffee and the taste of this creamer is out of this world! Silk Creamers are dairy-free, lactose-free, gluten-free and cholesterol-free. So, it’s a win-win.
I also lowered the amount of sugar in the recipe since the fruit is very sweet on its own. All in all this version of the recipe turned out pretty good. I am sure my grandmother would be pleased and I won’t feel guilty about having multiple cups on a given day.
